Biography of Dr. Don Boyd
After being employed at Hammond Baptist Schools for 32 years, as of July 1, 2008, Dr. Don Boyd has become the Care Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana, under Dr. Jack Schaap.
Dr. Boyd was born on a farm near Pikeville, Kentucky, on August 18, 1947. He is one of nine brothers and sisters. He learned the character trait of hard work at an early age, having to take care of the family farm and go to school at the same time. He was the only family member to graduate from high school. During his senior year at Betsy Layne High School, a teenage couple invited him to attend a revival meeting at their church. It was under a brush arbor that Dr. Boyd felt conviction about his lost condition and went forward during the invitation to receive Christ as Saviour. He was baptized in a local river and joined the church.
After graduation from high school, Mr. Boyd was influenced to attend Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, and later Midwestern Bible College in Pontiac, Michigan. It was at Midwestern that he met his wife, Linda. The Boyds were married on April 11, 1968.
In 1970, Dr. Boyd graduated from college and was called to the Beth El Baptist Church in Keene, New Hampshire, as the Assistant Pastor.
In 1972, Dr. Boyd returned to college, but this time to Hyles-Anderson College for a one year Pastor’s Refresher Course. After the year a Hyles-Anderson College, he returned to New Hampshire and started am independent, fundamental Baptist church in Manchester.
In 1976, Dr. Boyd returned to Hammond at Brother Hyles’ request and began teaching Bible at Hammond Baptist Junior High School. After teaching Bible for five years, Brother Hyles asked him to be Assistant Principal of Hammond Baptist High School.
In May, 1990, Dr. Boyd received an honorary doctorate degree from Hyles-Anderson College. During the summer of 1991, Brother Hyles asked Dr. Boyd to become Principal of Hammond Baptist High School.
During his first year as the principal, Dr. Boyd went for an eye exam that revealed cancer in his left eye. Soon after the Christmas break, Dr. Boyd had his left eye removed and returned to school wearing a patch. To help him through this difficult time, the student body also wore eye patches.
Through the loss of his eye and many other adversities, Dr. Boyd has learned to trust God and to pray even more: he has prayed each day for each student by name. Dr. Boyd soon became known as a “Prayer Swordsman” for Hammond Baptist High School. His example has helped guide many a student into adulthood. Don and Linda Boyd have five adult children, all Hammond Baptist alumni: Mark (1987), Dawn (1988), Trina (1990), Amber (1992), and Luke (2000). They also have fourteen grandchildren; some are now students in our Hammond Baptist Schools.
