SCHERERVILLE | They may not be affiliated with the IHSAA, but in the championship game of the Hammond Baptist National Tournament, the Swordsmen's fans created an atmosphere akin to that of a sectional championship game.
H.B.'s Chuckie Condict certainly wasn't going to let his home fans down. The senior guard proved to be a clutch player when the Swordsmen needed it, going 10-of-12 from the free-throw line en route to a game-high 17 points as H.B. celebrated with a nail-biting 51-47 victory over Arthur-Okaw Christian.
"This is awesome," Condict said while teammates cut down one of the nets in celebration. "I'm really excited. My coaches told me to get the ball to the rim, so I did. I love our fans -- they're awesome."
Overall, the Swordsmen shot 12-of-17 from the free-throw line, a crucial factor in their ability to escape with a narrow win.
For H.B. coach Fred Mooney, the tournament victory was the equivalent to a sectional championship for the Swordsmen (33-4). Arthur had narrowly beaten the Swordsmen twice earlier in the season, so to finally win was a satisfying feeling for Mooney.
"We've all watched the movie 'Hoosiers,'" Mooney said. "It used to be said that we're the best kept secret in Northwest Indiana. We don't want to be a secret because our young kids can play. We've got a good program here, and you can tell the spirit our young people have here."
Arthur was able to control the inside game early, using the presence of forward Brett Cashner to capitalize on some high-percentage shots. After facing an early 4-1 deficit in the first quarter, Arthur rebounded with a 9-0 run to eventually earn a 25-21 advantage at halftime.
