Hyles Anderson Tournament: Hammond Baptist won its first two games in pool play. Hammond Baptist defeated City Baptist, 40-20, and Faith Baptist Academy, 44-33.

John Woosley had 10 points and five rebounds, and Gerado Pineda had five steals in the win against City Baptist (4-4).

In the subsequent victory over Faith Baptist Academy from Wildamar, Calif., Woosley had 18 points and five rebounds, and Josh Culler had three steals.

Hammond Baptist (5-1) will play Fellowship Baptist from Durham, N.C., at 11:30 a.m. today in its final pool play game before the bracketed round this weekend.

Leading returning rebounder: Jon Hiles, 4 rpg.

Go-to player: Gerrardo Pineda, Sr., G; J.J. Aspiras, Sr., F. Both have more varsity experience than anyone else and are the unquestioned leaders of this senior-heavy ballclub. "All the players work well with them and have developed great chemistry because of those two," coach Fred Mooney said.

He's got next: Jim Hartman, Jr., G. One of two juniors on the team, Hartman has a nice shot and can knock it down from anywhere on the floor. "It's not a surprise that he can score because he is always staying after practice to work on his shot," coach Fred Mooney said.

Circled on the Calendar: Jan. 7 vs. Schaumburg Christian. "They are our long-time rivals and always play us tough," Mooney said.

The Times' Breakdown

Year in and year out, the Swordsmen and Mooney manage to rip off at least 20 wins a season since he's been there. This year should be no different, as they return nine seniors from last year's 32-win team. Woosley, the only junior in the starting lineup, leads the pack with his 12.7 ppg coming back. Pineda and Aspiras are long and provide depth on the perimeter, as they have both played on varsity for at least two years. Hiles looks to be more of a force in the paint and expand on his 4 rpg from last year. "We're optimistic and athletic," Mooney said. "We may have lost a lot of shooting from last year's team, but the athleticism and experience will make up for that."
